60 Artists Collaborate with Residents and Businesses of Old Oakville

60 Artists Collaborate with Residents and Businesses of Old Oakville

By Nancy Fornasiero

Again this year, ACE Coworking is excited to support a favourite event of ours: ART IN MY GARDEN. This wonderful neighbourhood initiative is the brainchild of one of our creative ACE members, Rachel Williams, who launched it back in 2021 as a joyful outdoor antidote to the pandemic shutdowns.

This year, almost 60 artists will be sharing work across 30 gardens in the picturesque, tree-lined neighborhood just south of our flagship location on Robinson Street in Old Oakville. Everyone is invited to take an afternoon to immerse themselves in an afternoon of art appreciation.

In 2023, over 1500 visitors attended and enjoyed paintings, textiles, mosaics, letterpress activities, and captivating sculptures, with local homeowners and some St. Jude’s Church parishioners also contributing their own artistic flair.

ACE Coworking Counted as Community Sponsor

Many downtown Oakville businesses are supporting the event, with lead sponsors being local businesses: Niblock Real Estate, Proscape Land Design , and Chervin Kitchen & Bath. ACE is proud to be counted among the community sponsors. “This is what ACE Coworking does consistently – build community. Thank you for creating a space that fosters and supports local entrepreneurship and creativity!” says Rachel Williams.

Rachel attributes her event’s success mainly to the unwavering support of her local friends and neighbours who generously share their gardens: “The wonderful thing about how things have grown is that we have a list of local homeowners keen to be involved, and different artists applying to take part every year. We know it’s appreciated by everyone who comes, and by the artist community who have this amazing opportunity to share their work. This year more local businesses are becoming involved too and the day promises to have new art and interactive opportunities for everyone to try.”

If you believe in supporting local artists and love to look at beautiful things, then you should definitely save the date for this fabulous FREE event: Saturday, September 7, 12–3pm. (Rain date Sunday September 8.)

This is Oakville at its best – offering a free, community-based arts initiative that was created to foster a sense of goodwill, celebrate local talents and inspire everyone to go a little slower to appreciate what we have right here at home.

See the map of host locations to plan your day by visiting the event’s website. Stay in touch via their mailing list or watch Instagram (@artinmygarden)  for announcements. Hope to see you there!

Ace Coworking Celebrates Coworking Day 2024

Ace Coworking Celebrates Coworking Day 2024

By Nancy Fornasiero

Coworking Day, celebrated annually on August 9th, recognizes the collaborative spirit and innovative nature of coworking spaces worldwide. Coworking spaces are more than just a place to work; they are vibrant communities that offer numerous benefits to enhance your professional and personal life.

5 Reasons Coworking Makes Your Life Better

1 Enhanced Productivity

Free from the distractions of home or your local coffee shops, all ACE locations are equipped with ergonomic furniture, high-speed internet, and essential office supplies waiting to get your day started whenever you are. You focus on the work, ACE takes care of keeping the office.

2 Improved Work-Life Balance

Even the most disciplined among us are challenged to maintaining a healthy work-life balance in the face or remote work. Blurred personal and professional lines often lead to longer work hours and increased stress. A dedicated workspace away from home, keeps work at the office where it belongs. We constantly hear from our members how their personal well-being has improved since working in our spaces.

3 Networking Opportunities

Over the years we have seen so many new businesses launch after a connection was made in our ACE community. Often, it’s the casual conversations in our lounges and around the coffee stations that lead to word-of-mouth marketing and new business opportunities.

4 Cost-Effective and Flexible Solutions

Traditional office spaces can burden freelancers and small businesses with high overhead costs and long-term leases. Coworking spaces offer cost-effective alternatives with flexible membership plans that cater to different needs and budgets — most beneficial for startups and entrepreneurs who may need to scale their operations up or down quickly without being tied to a long-term commitment.

5 Access to Premium Amenities

Coworking spaces come with a range of amenities that can enhance your work experience. These include high-speed internet, printing services, conference rooms, private phone booths, and even free coffee and snacks. At ACE we also offer a full calendar of networking, personal development, and wellness events. Partnering with local business groups helps our members expand their networks and boost their business successes!

Celebrate Coworking This Month with Ace Coworking!

Coworking spaces are more than just a place to work; they are vibrant communities that offer numerous benefits to enhance your professional and personal life. Members can choose from various options, such as daily passes, monthly memberships, or dedicated desks. Our offices can be rented by the day or for terms as short as 6 months. Jump aboard the Coworking bandwagon and celebrate National Coworking with us this month!

March 8 is International Women’s Day – Let’s Celebrate Together!

March 8 is International Women’s Day – Let’s Celebrate Together!

By Nancy Fornasiero

International Women’s Day is a time to honour the achievements of women entrepreneurs, so naturally a women-owned business like ACE Coworking is excited to take part in the celebration!

We’re proud to support and serve 50 amazing “Acer” women in our community. We have the privilege of seeing them up close – creating, innovating, collaborating, and building impactful businesses and careers.

IWD is also a time to shine a light on female resilience, while at the same time serving as a platform to raise awareness about gender equality and systemic issues that still hinder the advancement of women all around the world. This year’s theme – “Inspire Inclusion” – reminds us that we still have work to do.

Most of all, celebrating this day fosters a sense of solidarity, encouraging women entrepreneurs to network, share experiences, and empower one another. Speaking of empowerment, we have a number of Oakville events to recommend this year that are sure to lift you up…

OFFA’s 4th Annual IWD Film Event

ACE is a long-time partner of the Oakville Film Festival (OFFA). Every year in March, OFFA celebrates women in film and the arts, and this year is no exception. There will be live music by award-winning singer/songwriter Sydney Mae, a presentation by Grandmother’s Voice and Butterfly Spirit Drum Circle of Women, and of course the main attraction, a critically acclaimed documentary: “500 Days in the Wild.” In it, award-winning director, cinematographer, and author, Dianne Whelan, recounts her personal story of resilience. The doc highlights issues related to conservation, climate change, diversity, and one woman’s unscripted personal journey of discovery: hiking, biking, paddling, snowshoeing and skiing across our breathtaking country! Partial proceeds from ticket sales go to The Women’s Centre of Halton, an important community organization that supports local women in crisis.

Monday, March 4, 6:15 PM – 10 PM

TogetHER Evening

Downtown Oakville BIA is celebrating IWD2024 with their inaugural event: TogetHER. The event highlight will be a panel featuring three inspiring female founders: Ruth Tal (Fresh Kitchen & Juice Bar), Christine Peters (Lemonwood), and Hailey Bogaert (HB Face). All of these women launched their businesses locally and have scaled them to impressive heights. ACE founder, Nancy Fornasiero, will moderate the panel discussion and lead the Q&A. After the panel, attendees will enjoy cocktails and charcuterie, networking, and complimentary headshots. End the evening by sipping, shopping, and celebrating at a variety of Downtown Oakville businesses. Ticket revenue will be donated to the Oakville Zonta Club, which empowers women worldwide through service and advocacy.

HERhalton Women’s Day Breakfast

Hosted by HALTECH, our local regional innovation center, this annual event always brings together the innovation and entrepreneur community from across Halton and beyond. (ACE Coworking is a proud community partner of the event again this year.) This is an event we never miss: a superb chance to hear inspiring stories, meet new interesting people, and celebrate the success of local women-led businesses. This year’s keynote speaker is Miryam Lazarte, Founder of Global Startups Accelerator and General Partner of GSA Ventures, a fund committed to investing in immigrant technology entrepreneurs. It’s sure to be a worthwhile morning of connecting and learning.

2024 Honorary Ace Membership awarded to local not-for-profit, Bandology.

2024 Honorary Ace Membership awarded to local not-for-profit, Bandology.

By Nancy Fornasiero

ACE Coworking is excited to announce that the recipient of our 2024 Honorary Membership is a wonderful local not-for-profit: Bandology.

“Bandology was willed into being by people who understand the multiple life-long benefits that music provides. United by common goals while participating in a high school music parent association, the co-founders were inspired to go beyond the classroom and into the community to help spread the love of music.”

The organization’s goal is simple: more music for more kids!

Since 2017, Bandology has been offering free resources and services to kids who would not otherwise have access to music education. Music workshops; percussion parties; support, resources and workshops for music educators; research initiatives; an instrument lending library; and most famously, Band Camp, in which students spend a week of the summer playing and interacting with other musicians their age. Unbelievably, this is just a fraction of all they do – visit their website to learn more.

What’s an Honorary ACE Membership?

As a way of giving back to the community, every year at ACE Coworking we donate a free membership, including use of boardroom space, to a deserving local registered charity or NFP. We seek to partner with organizations who a) would benefit from the ability to meet in person but don’t have budget for space, b) help to make Oakville a better place to live, and c) possess values closely aligned with our own.

2023’s Honorary Member was Oakvillegreen, and we continue to have a friendly and supportive relationship with them!

This year we had many deserving applicants, but you might say that Bandology’s application really “struck a chord” with us – we knew that they’d be a great fit as we are also music lovers and big believers that the arts can enhance the lives of children and youth immeasurably. We are so honoured to be able to support the staff and volunteers that make Bandology tick.

Partnering with Community Leaders

We recently had the pleasure of meeting with Lisa Michaels, the Executive Director and Co-Founder of Bandology, along with her colleagues, Sandy Wright (Education Manager and Head of Programming) and Julianna Rutledge (Innovation Manager and Head of Operations). Together we came up with a plan for making their board meetings, training sessions, and staff meetings more professional and comfortable thanks to access to our coworking spaces and meeting rooms.

We looking forward to this exciting collaboration!

If you’re interested in the 2025 ACE Honorary Membership, follow ACE Coworking on LinkedIn or Instagram – or sign up for our newsletter – to learn when nominations/applications will open for next year.

Honorary Ace Membership 2024 Call for Applications

Honorary Ace Membership 2024 Call for Applications

By Nancy Fornasiero

November 28 is Giving Tuesday, the perfect time to announce that our applications for the 2024 Honorary ACE Membership has opened!

What’s Giving Tuesday

This is a day for Canadians to come together and donate to charities and causes that are important to them. This national day of giving was established to shift the focus off the over-the-top consumerism of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, and we are 100% behind that idea!

What’s an Honorary ACE Membership?

As a way of giving back to the community, every year at ACE we donate a free membership, including use of boardroom space, to a deserving local registered charity or NFP. We seek to partner with organizations who a) would benefit from the ability to meet in person but don’t have budget for space, b) help to make Oakville a better place to live, and c) possess values closely aligned with our own.

Honorary ACE Coworking Member 2023: Oakvillegreen

One of the founding principles of the coworking industry is sustainability and environmental responsibility, so the latest recipient of an honorary membership was a perfect fit for us. For the past year, Oakvillegreen has held their board meetings in our space free of charge, and we also support the organization by promoting their initiatives to our members and beyond through our digital platforms and at our in-person events. (Learn more about our partnership here.)

Recently Oakvillegreen thanked us in a special way. Did you know that the Latin name for a maple tree is “ACER”? Since this is what we call our members, they thought it would be a cool gesture to plant a maple (acer) tree here in Oakville and dedicate it to us. No thank-you was necessary, but we tree-huggers were really touched by the gesture!

We have been super proud to partner with Oakvillegreen. We will always be supporters of the group – but in terms of a formal membership arrangement, it’s time for us to spread the love to a new organization…

Honorary ACE Coworking Member 2024

We know that there are dozens of groups doing great work to make our town a better place, and their boards and committees are meeting around someone’s dining room table or in coffee shops, or entirely over video calls. They deserve better than that, and we would love to support them! With a free ACE membership, they would get all this:

  • 24/7 access to a professional office
  • coffee and tea for their meetings
  • boardroom access whenever needed, complete with technology for hybrid meetings
  • access to a podcast room
  • a mailing address (if needed)
  • promotion about their initiatives via our newsletter, social media feeds, and internal communications to our ACE members
  • access to host fundraisers or educational events in our space

Are you a part of (or know of) a worthy organization who would enjoy having physical headquarters to work from? Please do a good deed this Giving Tuesday by helping us spread the word!

We are accepting applications until Dec 24, 2023, and the recipient will be announced on January 5, 2024.

Interested organizations must fill in this application form in order to qualify. Questions? Email us (info@acecoworking.ca) for more information.

ACE Celebrates Small Businesses!

ACE Celebrates Small Businesses!

By Nancy Fornasiero

October is Small Business Month in Ontario. At ACE Coworking, we like to use it as a time to both look forward to the opportunities that are in front of our company and look back on the successes and challenges we have experienced. One of the best parts of operating a coworking space is that we can amplify this by leaning on the experiences of our members too.

Entrepreneurship can be a lonely road to travel sometimes, but you don’t have to do it alone (and you certainly shouldn’t). A little advice and support can go a long way to helping you travel the steep mountains and deep valleys on the road to being your own boss.

This year, we asked some of our entrepreneur-members a simple but powerful question: “What do you wish you knew when you were just starting your business that you do know now?” We got some valuable feedback and hopefully their answers can help you and your business, even if you are not in start-up.

From Katherine Vellinga, CEO, Zirkova Vodka

“You can’t plan for everything. I now realize that some of my biggest opportunities have come from the most unlikely places.”

From Shez Mehra, owner, The 194 Group

“At the outset I didn’t understand that solutions to business problems require looking a little deeper. Whatever is on the surface isn’t usually the real problem.”

From Ravi Kulkarni, principal, RKCS

“When talking to prospective clients I wish I’d known to get to the answer quicker. Too often a lot of time and effort was spent in the sales cycle when the answer was always going to be a “no” anyway. Coming to that realization sooner would have allow me more time to properly strategize as well as allocate our time and resources more efficiently.”

From Gail Kaufman, independent consultant (J Gail Kaufman Advisory & Consulting)

“Being in totally uncharted territory is okay. And feeling that you don’t know exactly what you’re doing is okay. Part of the journey is to just keep putting one foot in front of the other.”

From Moatassem Moatez, CEO & Founder MyCourier

“Business doesn’t move in a straight line, so don’t make the mistake of getting married to your plan. Also, something I’ve learned along the way is the importance of reframing obstacles. Even the biggest problems sometimes lead to solutions and opportunities that can help you.”

From Jon Root, Creative Director & Founder, Look Local Magazine and Treehouse Creative Agency

“Believe that when you really go ‘all in’ you will find a way to meet every challenge. The hard work is worth it and, in the end, it will pay off.”

ACE Coworking Loves Podcasts!

ACE Coworking Loves Podcasts!

By Nancy Fornasiero

Imagine if there were a day to celebrate the magic of podcasting and the incredible voices that make it all possible? Well, it already exists: it’s called International Podcasting Day and it’s marked every year on September 30.

Why So Popular?

Listening to podcasts is like having a best friend who’s always got something interesting to share. Covering everything from thrilling true-crime stories to deep dives into cool science discoveries to personal storytelling, there’s a podcast for everyone. Some of our favourites here at ACE Coworking are educational ones hosted by business leaders, marketing experts, or thought leadership gurus.

Whatever type you enjoy, I’m sure you’ll agree that the best thing about podcasts is that you can tune in from almost anywhere – during your commute, while sweating it out at the gym, or simply while cooking dinner or doing household chores.

Podcasts are no longer just a niche pastime, by the way. As of 2023 the number of podcast listeners worldwide has reached almost 500 million!

How to Choose a Podcast?

With over 5 million podcasts to tune into, offering a mind-boggling range of topics and voices, it can be hard to decide which one to choose. Start by asking your friends and coworkers which podcasts they enjoy – here at ACE Coworking, whether by the water cooler or over a lunch break, we’re always suggesting favourites to one another.

Speaking of which, I’d like suggest a few gems that might not yet be on your radar…

 Members of The Chamber

If you like to know “what’s going on around town” then this podcast, produced by The Oakville Chamber of Commerce, is for you. The interviews help us as listeners learn about local industry, grow our networks, and feel more connected to the community in which we live and work.

As founder/operator of ACE, I was interviewed on the most recent episode of “Members of the Chamber.” I got to talk about the genesis of ACE, the coworking industry in general, and what makes our community at ACE unique. (Shout-outs were extended to several of our partners and members, so if you belong in that category be sure to tune in!)

Let’s Talk About Wellness & Talent

Lifestyle entrepreneur and coach, Che Marville, is a long-time ACE member, and a woman with an amazing network of fascinating professionals. Thanks to these relationships she has no shortage of interviewees for her episodes, which often motivate and inspire with their focus on the topics of wellness and talent. Che self-describes as being “dedicated to advancing holistic well-being and fostering inclusive dialogues.” If you’re interested in topics of personal growth, check it out here. (Pro tip: In Season 1 Episode 50, you’ll learn more about ACE Co-founder, Mark Fornasiero.)

Consulting Mastery

If you’re a B2B consultant of any kind, this one’s for you. Hosted by ACE members, Ahmad Munavar and Karie Miller, this podcast (also on video on YouTube) features an engaging back-and-forth banter with these two whip-smart experts from Boutique Growth Agency, AKA “The 90 Day Pipeline.” They invite you to join them to “explore the art of delivering outstanding client value, earning a higher income, and thriving in today’s marketplace.” (Hint: I really loved recent episode #8 called “You’re Not in Control.” If you also have control freak tendencies, be sure to check it out.)

ACE’s New Podcast Room

Since so many of our members are involved in creating podcasts – as well as making and delivering webinars, online courses, YouTube videos, etc. – we decided to set up a dedicated room for all this to happen conveniently, professionally, and in style! The good news for you is that we are also renting out to the public. We even have an in-house videographer if you need professional support for recording, filming or editing your finished product. Contact us by email (info@acecoworking.ca) or by text (289-801-8731) to learn more.

So, for International Podcasting Day, how about joining us in the celebration? Tune into one of the above, or explore a new podcast that you’ve been meaning to get to. Let’s honour the voices that have made this medium a global sensation, shaping the way we learn, share, and connect with one another. 🎧

The Scoop on Coffee in the Office

The Scoop on Coffee in the Office

One the things our members love most about the ACE Office “freebies” is our excellent coffee from Oakville’s Firebat Coffee Roasters. But some of us hit the café area with more frequency and urgency than others. It got us wondering: is there such a thing as too much of a good thing when it comes to caffeination?

We decided to check in with our resident health & wellness experts at the The FlipSide to explain the pros and cons.

The Good News

You may think that the biggest benefit of drinking coffee is the jolt of energy it gives you, but did you know it also provides a nice dose of fibre and a boost to your cells?

According to Dr. Tim Spector, a cup of coffee has more fibre than a glass of orange juice (1.5 gm per cup of coffee vs 0.7 gm in same amount of OJ.). For many adults, coffee represents the main source of dietary fibre. The recommended daily intake is 28 grams of fibre, but definitely don’t drink 18 cups to get there!

The main source of nutrients for your gut bacteria is found in fibre, so your morning cup can be a very good thing – especially when you consider the fact that coffee is rich in a particular type of fibre that highly specialized microbes in your gut feed on exclusively.

Coffee also has a high concentration of polyphenols: compounds found in plants that impact our health positively. They play a major role in giving plants colour, favour, and micronutrients. Consuming plants high in polyphenols protects us against heart disease, regulates blood sugar, reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes, and slows the visible signs of aging.

Caffeine Fix vs Decaf

In nature, caffeine is an insect repellent created by plants for self-protection. In humans, caffeine acts as a psychoactive stimulant drug by activating an adrenaline delivery system to help enhance alertness, focus, concentration, and mental and physical performance. It takes 20 minutes to feel the jolt, and 5 to 7 hours to feel the crash once 50% of the caffeine has worn off. Key point? Caffeine does definitely affect your brain and nervous system.

If you enjoy coffee but don’t want caffeine, decaf is an option. However, beware: “decaffeinated” does not mean “non-caffeinated.” The most effective processes can remove up to 99% of the caffeine, but many products still have an active range of 3-10% caffeine.

The quid about decaf is that if you want to get the benefits of the coffee bean (fibre and polyphenols), but less caffeine, seek high-quality coffee. Decaffeination changes the density of the bean, rendering a darker and shiny look. Decaf also goes stale more quickly; experts suggest buying decaf in beans and grinding it yourself. Decaf is nearly as healthy if polyphenols are retained, but more research is needed given that current studies lack big numbers.

Coffee and Sleep

Two factors determine your wake-sleep cycle. One is circadian rhythm. The second – the important when we consider coffee – is what Dr. Matt Walker calls sleep pressure. It goes like this: upon waking, sleep pressure molecules start building in our brains. If unaltered, this continues to happen naturally for 12 to 16 hours, building natural fatigue which later in the day will put us to sleep. (This is part of the melatonin release process.) Caffeine has the power to artificially pause and modify this natural brain pattern.

Let’s explain with an example. Imagine your brain is a large empty theatre. Every morning, upon waking, the theatre opens its doors and sleep pressure molecules start coming in, slowly, occupying the seats, one by one. After a coffee, the theatre doors slam shut: no more sleep pressure molecules can enter to take a seat. But here’s the thing: sleep pressure is still lined up outside, waiting. While the doors are closed, you feel like a star on stage, performing full of energy and focus… until about 5 to 7 hours later when the caffeine starts to wear off. What happens then? The doors reopen and a crowd of sleep pressure molecules crash into the theatre, all at once. This is what we all know as the “caffeine crash.” This is also the moment when we think: “Oh, I need another coffee!”

And the process starts all over again.

What happens when we drink coffee later in the afternoon? At night, while trying to prep dinner or fall into a deep sleep, you get the crash of all those molecules trying to take their seats. If asleep, you may or may not wake up, but your brain will start a party for sure. Your sleep cycle will be interrupted, and you’ll wake the next morning fatigued feeling like you desperately need… a cup of coffee!

Moral of the Story

Coffee in and of itself is not a bad thing, in moderation. But beware if it’s become a crutch to make up for a lack of energy or continuous poor sleep, or the boost needed to hustle against time regardless of what your body is telling you. In the words of Dr. Spector: “if coffee damages your sleep, then all the benefits are irrelevant.”

ACE is excited to present this much-anticipated dramedy by director/writer/producer Matt Johnson which has 98% on Rotten Tomatoes!

According to Peter Travers: “A fab cast led by Jay Baruchel and Glenn Howerton tells the sad but true story of the flame-out of the world’s first smartphone and the manchildren who created it. This raucous workplace comedy (think The Office) puts an unexpected lump in your throat.”

Great news for ACE members and friends: ACE has a limited number of FREE tickets to the BlackBerry screening which will be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis. If you would like to be on the VIP guest list, email info@acecoworking.ca (or text 289-801-8731) to request a complimentary pass.

Supporting Indie Filmmakers

ACE Coworking has a been long-time supporter of the local film festival. Over the years ACE founder, Nancy Fornasiero, has held volunteer positions with OFFA; ACE’s Robinson Street location has served as the venue for the OFFA gala afterparty; and ACE currently provides meeting space for OFFA’s hard-working board members. “We like to help anyway we can as we believe that supporting the arts and creative entrepreneurs makes Oakville a better place to live, learn, and have fun,” says Fornasiero.

In addition, ACE Coworking has actively supported and collaborated with local indie film-makers such as Cat Hostick (recent project “P is the new M”) and Jack Kukolic (recent project, Domestic Fowl).

“ACE Coworking has a reputation for encouraging start-ups and creatives, and it’s well-deserved. Nancy has stepped up a number of times to support my film projects, whether by making key introductions or being open to collaborations,” says Kukolic.

At the recent launch for OFFA2023, Wendy Donnan, the festival’s executive director said, “We’re really excited to have Nancy and ACE Coworking back this year, especially as presenting sponsor for the BlackBerry film.”

Donnan added: “We can’t wait to welcome everyone back all of our venues for this year’s festival, showing the best movies across Canada and around the world!”
